Abbott Laboratories on Thursday said Alere Inc. had agreed to turn over documents related to three government investigations into potential bribery and billing violations, as the future of the health care companies’ $5.8 billion merger continues to hang in the balance.

Abbott and Alere had filed dueling lawsuits over the deal, with Alere accusing Abbott of trying to escape the merger agreement and Abbott countering that Alere was concealing important details about the probes, which only came to light after the merger was announced in early February.
